Butterfly joints in live edge furniture is very common.    Natural cracks and voids must be addressed properly to ensure stability of the wood over many, many decades of use.   This is a  fairly short video discussing tool blade sharpening for our live edge furniture using honing stones.   We recommend us of a honing guide for an easier and greatly controlled sharpening process but it can certainly be done free hand, too.
